There are two national discussions going on currently that the Northwest Alliance for Responsible Media would like your help in promoting. The first is happening with the Federal Trade Commission trying to protect the privacy of young people who are using the internet with little idea about how their information or data is being used and violating their personal privacy with “social media.” The second is the tragic school shootings in Connecticut and the cultural of violence that is perpetuated under the cover of the 1st Amendment. While some politicians are discussing new legislation to limit automatic weapons, the NRA is saying we need to look at the violence that is continually put together in media products to, as Neil Postman wrote “entertain ourselves to death.” This is not an either-or debate. It should be a national dialogue on raising healthy kids in a healthy society. To do that we have to include health care as well. The problem is you cannot have health reform or gun reform, without media reform. Now is the time to speak up for media reform and not allow the propagandist to shut down the dialogue before it has happened. Please consider joining the NWARM, become a member and help us bring these discussions to kitchen tables and then to the tables of state capitols, and eventually to Washington!
